OpenAI has officially launched its AI search update for ChatGPT, providing users with access to live information from the web. This release comes three months after the initial announcement of the SearchGPT prototype, now rebranded as "ChatGPT search." The tool enters a competitive field of AI search options, contending with both startups and tech giants like Google.
To enhance its AI search capabilities, OpenAI secured content licensing deals with publishers such as The Atlantic, Vox Media, and Condé Nast. These agreements allow the AI to use publishers' content for training in exchange for fees, ensuring clearer attribution of sources and reducing previous issues of hallucinations and misinformation.
The updated ChatGPT search is accessible to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Teams via the ChatGPT website, mobile app, and web app. While a global rollout is underway, certain regions, including the European Union, are not yet included. OpenAI plans to expand access to Enterprise and Edu plans later in November, with free users expected to gain access early next year.
Users are encouraged to utilize the tool's natural language processing abilities for complex queries and explore source links for a comprehensive understanding of AI-generated outputs. Despite some initial flaws, OpenAI aims to improve the user experience and continue evolving its AI search capabilities.
