The Flappy Bird Foundation has announced the anticipated return of the popular mobile game Flappy Bird as a Web3 game. However, Dong Nguyen, the original developer, has publicly denied any involvement or support for the cryptocurrency aspect of the project.
The Foundation claims to have acquired the rights from Gametech Holdings, LLC, which obtained the trademark after Nguyen's claim was terminated by the US Patent and Trademark Office in January. Nguyen clarified on X, his first post since 2017, that he had not sold anything nor supported the cryptocurrency endeavors associated with the game.
A hidden webpage from the Flappy Bird Foundation hinted at a Web3 release on the Solana blockchain, featuring "play to earn," "stake to own," and "free airdrops." Despite the nostalgic appeal, Nguyen's absence from the project raises questions about the authenticity and future direction of this Web3 iteration.
